FAQs
What is a credit card?
Credit cards are a flexible way to borrow money, and a secure way to spend in shops or online. They come with useful benefits, and can have a positive impact on your credit score when used responsibly. That means paying back on time, always making at least the minimum payment, and not going over your limit.
What can I use a credit card for?
Credit cards can be a useful form of finance, letting you spread the cost of one-off purchases or everyday expenses.
Remember though to be careful with 'cash transactions', like using your card to withdraw cash from an ATM or buying foreign currency. With these transactions you'll be charged interest on that amount from the day you used your card until you've cleared that balance.
Who can apply for a credit card?
Any UK resident over 18 can apply for a card, but not everyone will get accepted.
You're more likely to be accepted if you:
- have some history of managing credit, even if you've had CCJs or Defaults in the past.
- are on the electoral roll.
- haven't declared bankruptcy in the last 12 months.
What are some benefits of getting a credit card?
There are pros and cons when it comes to taking out any sort of credit, and it's important to consider your individual circumstances.
Pros of applying for a credit card:
- It can help improve your credit score when used in a responsible way.
- It can help you spread the cost of big spends.
- A credit card can be useful for unexpected or emergency costs.
Cons of applying for a credit card:
- If you only pay the minimum amount each month, your balance could take a long time to pay back, which could cost you more in interest over time.
- If used irresponsibly, a credit card can negatively affect your credit score, making it harder to borrow in the future.
